Did you know that Canada’s seniors population is expected to grow by nearly 70 per cent in the next 20 years? This will have a number of implications on the health-care system, including a dramatic increase in the number of people living with dementia.
Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of symptoms affecting memory, reasoning, language and behaviour.
Dementia is caused by different diseases and illnesses that affect the brain, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common, accounting for 60 to 80 per cent of all cases.
Dementia can significantly interfere with daily living and requires ongoing management and support, so early detection and proper diagnosis are crucial for improving quality of life.
Learn more about dementia’s causes, symptoms and treatments in this video with Dr. Lara Khoury, Geriatrician, and Jennifer Koop, Advanced Practice Nurse in dementia care.
